HIFU Shots vs Ultherapy Lines: How to Read a Price Quote in Ho Chi Minh City

You ask three clinics for a price. One replies "HIFU jawline, 300 shots". Another says "Ultherapy full face, 800 lines". The third writes "package price, unlimited shots". Three numbers, three units, and none of them compares with the others.

This article explains what shots and lines actually count, roughly how many each area of the face needs, why two people treating the same area receive different numbers, and the four quote formats that make you think you are comparing when you are not. It ends with three questions you can send to any clinic — in Vietnamese or English — to get a number you can actually compare.

Shots and lines measure the same thing — but do not convert 1:1

Both HIFU and Ultherapy deliver focused ultrasound in lines. Each time the handpiece is pressed to the skin and fired, the device lays down a row of small thermal points, evenly spaced, at a preset depth. Ultherapy calls that row a line. Ultraformer MPT calls it a shot. Geometrically they are close: a row roughly 25 mm long, containing many thermal points.

The differences sit inside that row:

Spacing between points. Ultraformer MPT lets the practitioner adjust point spacing within a shot, so the number of points per shot is not fixed.
Energy per point. The two systems run at different energy levels, adjusted by hand for each area.
Available depths. Ultraformer MPT cartridges come in 1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0 / 4.5 mm; Ultherapy in 1.5 / 3.0 / 4.5 mm. The shot count for an area depends on how many depths are layered.

So "is 800 Ultherapy lines the same as 800 HIFU shots?" has no correct answer. What you can compare is the result on your face against the number of lines you actually received — not the unit.

How many shots does each area need? The Ultraformer MPT reference table

These are the shot counts Hugo Beauty publishes per area, with the reason behind each. The prices sit on our HIFU pricing page; this article deliberately does not repeat them.

Thinner areas — forehead, eyes, neck alone, décolletage, hands — typically sit at 200–250 shots, because they use only one or two shallow depths over a small area.

The rule for reading any table: the more tissue layers an area needs, the higher the shot count — not "the more important the area". A 250-shot forehead and a 300-shot jawline are very different sessions in depth, even though the numbers look similar.

For Ultherapy, published full-face protocols commonly fall around 600–800 lines, and face-plus-neck above 1,000. Hugo Beauty does not operate an Ultherapy system, so we will not quote exact figures — ask the clinic that has the device, and ask for lines per area, not the total.

Why the same area can differ by 20–30% between two people

"250–300" is a range, not a number, for three reasons:

Size of the area. A long face with a wide jaw angle needs more rows than a small face. Two friends treating the jawline on the same day at 260 and 300 shots is normal.
Number of depths used. Someone with thicker tissue and mild SMAS laxity gets all three layers (4.5 – 3.0 – 1.5 mm). Someone with thin tissue who only needs surface tightening may skip the 4.5 mm layer — roughly a third fewer shots.
Goal. "Light firming to maintain" and "a visibly sharper jawline" are two different plans on the same area.

The cartridge has a counter: shots "received" vs shots "on the package"

Every genuine Ultraformer MPT cartridge has a shot counter and a maximum shot count on its label. The device counts down with every shot fired. This gives you a very concrete right: you can look at the counter before and after your session, and the difference is what you actually received.

The gap between "received" and "on the package" opens in three places:

A total with no per-area breakdown. "Full face, 800 shots" — but the forehead got 100, the cheeks 500 and the jawline only 200. The total is correct; the result is not what you paid for.
Shots fired into gel, not skin. A cartridge that is not pressed firmly still counts the shot. A careful practitioner re-seats the handpiece and fires again.
A cartridge near its expiry or its last shots. Energy can be inconsistent at the end of a cartridge's life. This is why "how many shots are left on the cartridge?" belongs on any clinic checklist.

Four quote formats that only look like a comparison

1. "Package price" with no number. Without a shot count you do not know what you are buying. At the same price, 200 shots and 300 shots are two different sessions. Ask for the number — if the clinic cannot give one, that is your answer.

2. "Unlimited shots". It sounds generous, but the right number of shots is enough for that area. Firing more does not lift more; it adds swelling, numbness and the risk of volume loss — see our article on HIFU and Ultherapy side effects. A serious clinic will not promise "unlimited" because it knows that is not good for you.

3. Price per minute. "30 minutes of HIFU" tells you nothing about shots, depth or area. In the same 30 minutes, a genuine device fires slowly and evenly; a cheap one fires fast and shallow. Time is not the unit of focused ultrasound.

4. A "course" with an unspecified number of sessions. HIFU Ultraformer MPT is normally one session, then maintenance after 12–18 months. A cheap "5-session course" usually means very few shots or low energy per visit — you pay five times for a result one proper session should give. How to ask for a quote by message: three questions that return a comparable number

You can send these three questions, word for word, to any clinic — including Hugo Beauty:

"For my [jawline], roughly how many shots (or lines), and at which depths?"
"Is the shot count recorded before we start, and can I see the cartridge counter?"
"Is this price for one session or a course, and how are additional shots charged?"

Frequently asked questions

Is 100 shots enough for the jawline?

With Ultraformer MPT, 100 shots covers one depth on one side of the jaw, or a very light touch-up. A full jawline needs 250–300 shots because both sides are treated at two or three depths. If a clinic quotes 100 shots for the jawline at a very low price, ask which depth they are using.

Are more shots better?

No. The right count covers the area at the correct depths without dense overlap. Beyond that you get more swelling and numbness, not more lift. That is why "unlimited shots" is a reason to ask more questions, not a bonus.

Is an Ultherapy line more expensive than a HIFU shot?

Per line, Ultherapy usually costs more because the system and transducers are far more expensive. But comparing one shot with one line is comparing the wrong unit. Compare the total cost for an equivalent result on the area you need, and ask both clinics for lines per area.
