Skin Care After Laser Hair Removal: How to Keep Skin Soft and Calm

A laser session is short. Aftercare is where most of the difference is made, and it is also where most of the problems come from — usually a hot shower on day one, or a gym session on day two.

The good news is that the routine is simple and short. Two careful days, one careful week, and then normal life until the next session.

Why the first days matter

During a session, heat travels down the hair to the root. The skin surface stays protected by the cooling tip, but the follicles underneath have absorbed real energy and need a short recovery period.

For a day or two the follicle openings are more receptive than usual. Sweat, friction, oil and product residue reach them more easily, and that is what turns a normal session into small bumps along the follicles a day later. Keeping the area clean, cool and dry for 48 hours prevents almost all of it.

Aftercare also protects the result. Skin that is irritated at the next appointment cannot be worked on at a full setting, which means a weaker session and a slower course overall.

The first 48 hours

Do:

  • Keep the area cool. A clean, cool compress helps on the first evening.

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser.

  • Apply a simple soothing gel — plain aloe vera or a fragrance-free recovery cream.

  • Wear loose cotton clothing.

  • Use sunscreen on any exposed area, every day, and reapply if you are outside.

Avoid:

  • Hot showers, sauna, steam and hot baths.

  • Swimming pools and the sea — chlorine and salt on freshly worked skin.

  • The gym, and anything that makes you sweat heavily.

  • Deodorant on underarms until the next morning.

  • Perfumed body lotion, alcohol-based toner, and anything with a strong scent.

  • Touching, scratching or rubbing the area.

If a little redness or a warm feeling stays for a few hours, that is expected. If it is getting worse rather than better after the first day, message us.

Days 3 to 7

By the third day the skin usually feels normal again. Two rules still apply.

No exfoliation for five to seven days. That means scrubs, brushes, exfoliating gloves, and acid products such as AHA, BHA and retinol on the worked area. Start again when the skin feels completely normal, and at a lower frequency than usual.

Sunscreen becomes the priority. Skin that has just been worked on reacts more strongly to sun for a couple of weeks. On the face, arms and legs, daily SPF is not optional if you want an even skin tone. In Ho Chi Minh City that also means the ride to work counts — a short trip on a motorbike at midday is real sun exposure.

Around day 7 to 14, hairs will start to appear and fall away. They look like regrowth, but most of them are treated hairs working their way out. You can help them along with a very gentle wipe in the shower once the week is over. Do not pull them.

Between sessions

Shave, do not wax. Shaving is fine at any point once the skin is calm, usually after about three days. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilators all remove the root, and the root is exactly what the next session needs. Stop those for four weeks before your next appointment.

Keep moisturising. A simple daily moisturiser keeps the skin barrier comfortable and makes the next session easier.

Watch the ingrown hairs. Laser normally reduces them over the course. If you still get them in one spot, tell your specialist instead of digging at them yourself.

Come back on schedule. Four to six weeks on the face, six to eight on the body. Coming late is not harmful, but it can mean missing the growth phase you were waiting for.

After a bikini session

The bikini area needs the same routine, with three extra points.

  • Keep it clean and dry, and change out of damp clothing quickly. In this climate that is the single most useful habit.

  • Cotton underwear, loose fit, for at least the first two days. Tight synthetic fabric plus sweat causes most of the irritation here.

  • No hot baths and no pool for 48 hours, and skip strong intimate washes. Plain water and a mild cleanser are enough.

If your period starts after a bikini session, use whatever you normally use, and change more often than usual for those two days.

What to look out for

Most sessions produce nothing more than a few hours of warmth and redness. It is still worth knowing the difference between normal and not.

Normal: redness for a few hours, small bumps around the follicles on the first day, mild dryness on day two or three, and hairs shedding in the second week.

Message us: redness that is stronger on day two than on day one, blistering, broken skin, a spreading rash, or anything that has not settled after three days.

We go through all of this at the end of every session, and our full aftercare guide covers our other services as well. If something appears after you get home, send a photo on WhatsApp. It is easier for us to see it than to guess.

Planning your next session

Package rates for each area, including six-session and ten-session courses, are listed on our price list. If you are still choosing areas, our laser hair removal page explains what each one covers. We are in Phu Nhuan, open 10:00 to 19:00 every day.

Prices and session packages for the bikini area are on our bikini laser hair removal page.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I go back to the gym?

After 48 hours. Heavy sweating on freshly worked skin is the most common cause of small bumps along the follicles the next day.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes, once the skin feels calm again, usually after about three days. Shaving is the only hair removal method to use between sessions. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the root and will weaken your next session.

Hairs are appearing a week after my session. Did it not work?

That is usually the opposite of a problem. Treated hairs are pushed out of the follicle in the one to three weeks after a session. They fall away on their own, so let them, and do not pull them.
